This activity aims to provide an authoritative review paper that will systematically assess our understanding of threshold breaching, irreversibility, and tipping in the climate system. The paper will also provide key recommendations for how Earth systems models can be improved to better understand these processes and identify potential early warnings. The WCRP is supporting this review paper that will contribute to the seventh assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). These topics are expected to be important across IPCC working groups. Hence, consensus building and a solid knowledge base will be important to contribute to the IPCC process.
