On March 21, 2025, global leaders, scientists, and policymakers will gather at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and Paris to mark the first-ever World Day for Glaciers, coinciding with the World Water Day. This high-level gathering will address the urgent need for glacier preservation and water security in the face of climate change.

The event, part of the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025, will feature:

  • Panel Discussions with UN leaders and government officials
  • Scientific Presentations on glacier research and climate adaptation
  • Launch of the UN World Water Development Report 2025
  • Policy Dialogues on international water cooperation
  • Networking Opportunities with key global stakeholders

Glaciers are essential to the global water cycle, supporting billions of people, ecosystems, and economies. Their rapid melting threatens water availability, food security, and entire communities especially in mountainous regions and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Co-sponsored by Barbados, Canada, Peru, Senegal, Singapore, Tajikistan, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates as well as UNESCO, WMO, UNDESA, UNDP, UNDRR, UN-Water, IAEA, IUCN and UNU-INWEH, the event aims to drive global action on glacier preservation and sustainable water management

Join the conversation and support climate action.
