Lighthouse Activities (LHAs) are ambitious and transdisciplinary exercises designed by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) with the goal to rapidly advance some of the new science, technologies, and institutional frameworks that are needed to more effectively manage climate impacts and meet society’s urgent need for robust and actionable climate information.
The Academy LHA was conceived on the realization that we need to ensure that climate science education and training not just keeps pace with, but anticipates, the knowledge and tools that will be required in the future to meet societal challenges and take advantage of the opportunities of a changing climate. The WCRP Academy is thus the research training advisory and coordination arm of the programme. Its mission is to equip current and future climate scientists with the knowledge, skills and attributes required to tackle the world’s most pressing and challenging climate research questions. The Academy will promote and advance lifelong learning opportunities and global equity in climate science training. Its success will be measured by the scope and diversity of the global climate research community that engages with the Academy as well as its ability to improve global access to high-quality climate science training and professional development without prohibitive costs to the trainee.
This call is an invitation for the community to self-nominate to become a member of the Steering Group (SG). We are particularly looking for people with interests and experience in graduate training, professional development, attracting philanthropic funds and/or developing a business plan. We seek members from all continents while candidates from the Global South are specially welcomed.
Tasks
The SG is responsible for the implementation of the Academy's science plan, its overall direction and services, as well as resource allocation. The SG reports to the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC). The SG will meet on-line and as frequently as required. Some out-of-hours work may be required due to time zone coordination.
